The Council Room

Chair detail
A detail of one of the leather-covered Council Room chairs.

The Executive Council Room was the place, until the early 1970s, where Ministers presented regulations requiring the Governor-General's signature.

The room is now regularly used for business meetings, such as the Rhodes and Georgetti Scholarship Committees, among others.

The Council Room also contains a collection of prints and photographs of earlier Government Houses, and caricatures of all New Zealand Governors and Governors-General since Captain William Hobson.

The Room also acts as the Government House library, and contains clipping books of newspaper stories about Government House and Governors-General dating back many years.
