  • <span class="title">Victoria Cross winner</span><br/>The Governor-General, Hon Anand Satyanand, conferred the first Victoria Cross for New Zealand on Corporal Bill Henry Apiata, of the 1st New Zealand Special Air Service, at Government House, Wellington on 26 July 2007. Cpl Apiata was awarded the Victoria Cross for New Zealand for his courageous actions in Afghanistan in 2004 when he placed himself in extreme danger to save the life of a seriously wounded comrade.
