Patronage in Focus
The Order of St John
The Order of St John was established almost 1000 years ago. The Order became established in New Zealand in 1885. It now provides ambulance services, the carer calling service, event services, first aid courses and the supply of first aid kits, the Friends of the Emergency Department group, Healthline, Life Link Medical Alarms and Safe Kids Programmes. It also provides significant programmes for young people from the age of six to 18 years of age. These programmes focus on teaching young people first aid, healthcare, leadership and life skills.

Royal and Vice-Regal Patronage

The Governor-General is the Patron of many different charitable, cultural, sporting and social organisations. This follows the tradition of royal patronage established in the United Kingdom, although the practices of granting Royal Warrants and Royal Charters have not been continued here.

In New Zealand there are three forms of royal recognition: by the granting of the use of the title “Royal”; by a member of the royal family acting as patron or president; and by members of the royal family holding honorary military appointments in the New Zealand Defence Force.
