Her Excellency Susan Satyanand (nee Sharpe) was born in Sydney in 1947. As her father was a New Zealander, her family moved to Auckland in 1955 where she later attended Epsom Girls' Grammar School.

Through her work in the law, she met Anand Satyanand and they were married in Auckland in 1970. They later travelled to India, Britain and Europe. Her interest in children led her to complete a Diploma in Education as a mature student and she taught for a time.

Mrs Satyanand was active in the Auckland Plunket Society and local kindergarten committees. Since moving to Wellington, she has been involved in voluntary work in the Citizens' Advice Bureau and the Benefit Rights Centre as well as being Treasurer for UNICEF Ladies Auxiliary, and Secretary of the Amity Club.

She enjoys playing bridge, walking, reading, gardening and botany. The Satyanands have three adult children—two daughters and a son.
